The Wabanaki Alliance has endorsed Richard Goldman for State Representative in House District 53.
The Wabanaki Alliance was formed to advance the sovereignty of the Wabanaki Nations in Maine: the Mi’kmaq Nation, the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, the Passamaquoddy Tribe, and the Penobscot Nation. It endorses candidates who will support tribal self-determination in the Legislature.
Maine remains an outlier. The 1980 Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act leaves the Wabanaki Nations without rights that the other 570 federally recognized tribes hold. Richard supports correcting that, and he treats it as a question of basic fairness rather than a partisan one.
Government should not be a zero-sum game. Restoring sovereignty does not take anything away from the towns of District 53. It ends an arrangement that should have been fixed a long time ago.
